Van-based people carriers (often sold with 8–9 seats) can be a practical alternative to large MPVs for families, shuttle services and business transport. But because they’re derived from commercial van platforms, their standard safety equipment has not always matched what buyers expect from passenger cars.
That was the message from Euro NCAP when it ran “business and family van” crash tests and called for higher safety standards and better equipment on these vehicles.
In a Euro NCAP press release dated 12 December 2012, the organisation reported these star ratings for the vehicles it tested in that programme:
Euro NCAP’s broader point was that these assessments used protocols intended to be more representative than the legal minimum tests for van-derived vehicles, and that manufacturers and legislators should push safety fitment further.
Those results are now historical. Models have been replaced or heavily updated since 2012, and safety equipment changes by:
If you’re shopping today, use Euro NCAP’s latest ratings for the specific model year you’re considering (and check whether the rating assumes any optional safety pack).
It’s also worth noting that Euro NCAP’s approach for vans has evolved in recent years (including dedicated commercial van ratings focused on safety assist/ADAS), so you shouldn’t compare scores across different programmes without checking the protocol notes.
Whether you’re buying for family use or passenger work, these checks usually matter more than the badge:
Prioritise features that prevent impacts in the first place, such as:
Euro NCAP’s newer commercial van assessments place heavy emphasis on these “Safety Assist” technologies.
Two vans with the same name can have very different safety spec depending on trim and options. If an optional safety pack is available, check:
For 8–9 seat layouts, check:
If the vehicle has had seats added or removed, or has a specialist passenger conversion, treat it like a modification:
Euro NCAP’s 2012 tests were a useful warning that some van-based 8–9 seaters could trail cars on safety equipment. The best move in 2026 is to ignore the old league table and instead check the latest Euro NCAP rating for your exact model year and spec, then prioritise modern ADAS and proper passenger fitment.
